Top 30 Juegos Homebrew elegidos por los usuarios - Top 30 Best Homebrew games chosen by the users

More than 25 years ago, the British magazine Your Sinclair had an excellent idea: In the already-almost-dead Spectrum scene, they wanted to ask their readers about the best games for the Spectrum. The list was comprehensive, 100 titles: http://live.worldofspectrum.org/infoseek/magazines/your-sinclair/93#58
I wanted to do my own homage to those who started the world of this magnificent computer and to those who have continued making it better and alive with their new games, so I decided that I would go to Twitter, fórums, Facebook and so on to ask about the best Homebrew games (Spectrum games made in the last 20 years). I got a good answer, around 100 people, but I decided to reduce the list to the Top 30, in order to make these amazing new creations more visible and give them the credit they deserve.

10 - El Stompo
(Stonechat Productions, 2014)

Dave Hughes has always been one of the most skilled programmers when comes to multicolor in the Spectrum, creating games that seem to escape the restrictions graphic-wise. In this title we are enjoying a puzzle-platformer, where movement synchronization, puzzle solving and use of brain will be necessary. All that marinated with wonderful and awesome-drawn sprites. It shows what Nirvana is capable of.

10 - Dead Space
(Radastan, 2017)

Recent Homebrew, and made by one of the most known people in the spanish scene, Radastan, Dead Space is a demake of a known game for current machines. In this Spectrum versión, the action turns into a space Saimazoom, a game with a upper view where we will have to doge enemies and find ítems, in a game where exploration is the main task. It has colourful graphics and the charm of the first Spectrum games.

10 - Sokobaarn
(Bob Smith, 2017)

Bob Smith is one of the longest Homebrew authors, as he was already very active in the past decade. He is indeed one of the best too, and he possesses a lot of impressive technically ones, most of them with brilliant and original executions, as LumASCII or splATTR. Sokobaarn shows that the filmation style is always a sign of success in the Spectrum, and he takes the idea behind Sokoban to add another dimensión. A sheep will have to place all the thatch packs in their place, which is now more challenging as now we have 3D!

10 - Dreamwalker: Alter Ego 2
(Retrosouls, 2014)

It may be surprising to see Alter Ego 2 so low in the list, as it could easily be considered better tan the first part, but probably Alter Ego 1 had more impact due to the surprise factor when it got released. Nonetheless, Dreamwalker uses the Nirvana engine, with multicolor graphics and some new stuff compared to the first part, regarding the hability of our héroes. A lot of levels, well craved difficulty curve and a lot of puzzle-action genre of game.

10 - Retroforce
(Climacus & McNeil, 2017)

4th place in the last ZX Dev Conversions compo Retroforce is a conversión with some extra touches of a coin op from Tehkan, Star Force. It is a shoot-em-up, with a super smooth vertical scroll and where everything moves so fast that even the autor of the game decided to implement a mode in the 128 versión to choose speed and energy. Monochrome but quite well drawn, it is respectful to the coin op spirit. A lot of action and shooting, somthing seen not very often in the current Spectrum scene.

10 - Carlos Michelis
(World XXI Software, 2012)

Maybe it should be higher in the list, as this game from World XXI software has a very interesting and deep gameplay with outstading graphics and musics. It is an arcade with the same perspective as Into the Eagle´s nest, where we control a smart and daredevil carácter called Carlos Michelis who was to infiltrate and accomplish some missions in the enemy´s bases. Different type of enemies, different kind of strategies to use and an enormous map make this game in a-must-try. It also has 3 different missions and an intro.

10 - Ninjakul
(Greenweb Sevilla, 2018)

Even though it is a quite recent title, and with a shorter duration compared to other games made by Antonio Greenwebsevilla, the thruth is that Ninjakul received a warm welcoming in the scene. Made by using MK2 from the Mojon Twins, in Ninjakul we will have to pick a series of objects placed throughout the map. It is also important to say that it was created in order to collect some funds for the AUIC to support the retro scenes. It is a game that creates instant fun in the player, as it is a classic platformer with a lot of jumps and shooting, with very cute graphics and nice color.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

10 - Speccy Bros.
(Climacus & Radastan, 2012)

The second game by Climacus in this list, along with Retroforce, Speccy Bros. is the conversión of the well known arcade Snow Bros. by Toaplan. Changing slightly the name, the team made of Climacus and Radastan managed to capture the spirit of the coin op, with a quite fatihful conversión, which takes the Spectrum to one of those single-screen arcades without scroll and a bunch of enemies, which results in a super fun game. Although in the beginning it may be a bit difficult to get used to the controls, son after you will realize this is almost like an arcade machine in the Spectrum, getting you hooked until the end. Good job by Radastan in the graphics, with some spectacular final bosses.

10 - Souls Remaster
(Retrobytes Productions, 2013)

One of those hidden gems of the Homebrew, this demake of Dark Souls was a sweet surprise that Retrobytes Productions gave away some years ago. It is a mixture of arcade with a lot of 1 to 1 battles and some adventure touches, as we need to find objects. The strategy factor also plays a role, as we have different strategies to follow when facing enemies and situations (our Powers and habilities improve, like in a RPG game). With a deep gameplay, the graphics are awesome and colourful, specially in the Remaster edition, and a very weel thought map will do the rest. Only misses music to be better.

10 - Survivisection
(Sanchez crew, 2012)

This was one of the first things that let us see that Sanchez is not a normal developer. Made in Russia, this is an open conversión of The Chaos Engine, with some of the features of that game being present in the Spectrum version. The russian coder got together a team that created exceptional graphics and a gameplay never-seen-before in the Spectrum. Big maps, with a lot of items, weapons and secrets make this title a totally worth experience in our Spectrums 128K.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

10 - Pentacorn Quest
(Nightwolf, 2015)

This is one of those cases where you can see a lot of talent everywhere. From the totally outstanding sprites and backgrounds (really colourful) until the sweet tunes for the 128K AY chip, Pentacorn Quest has an excellent design of the maps and an addictive progress as we play more and more. Done with the Mojon Twins Churrera, this could be easily the best game out of it. It is mostly a platformer, that has some adventurous touches as we need to find and use objects. Possible to complete but a bit demanding.

10 - Dark Hospital
(Huelvy, 2017)

It is always good to see that some genres, not so popular back in the day (although interesting), are still alive in the Spectrum scene. After a hiatus since we received the text adventures from Josep Coletas, now Huelvy decided that it was about time to start typing in our Spectrums again and created a creepy but very good adventure where we have to find our daughter (it is in Spanish, though). By using the PAWS with a lot of mastering, Isaac manages one of the best text adventures done in this language. The puzles are sometimes tough but logical, and there are a lot of illustrated screens, which really helps.

10 - Ooze
(Bubblesoft, 2017)

Probably one of the best games ever made with AGD, Ooze is a well-thought title whose technical departments are also in a high level. The main feature and surprising factor is the hability of our Slimey character to walk upside down, stuck to the ceiling. This power we have that defies the gravity, provides an interesting gameplay which is really powered by the intelligent design of the screens. His autor, Andy Johns, is an ex of the industry, who worked, amongs others, in Electronic Arts.

9 - Gimmick! Yumetaro Odyssey
 (Greenweb Sevilla, 2018)

Gimmick could be considered as many games in one, and not only because of its remarkable duration in order to complete it, but also because it is a homage to many different games from the 80s, such Mario Bros., Sonic, Shinobi, Ghosts N´ Ghosts, etc. By using the engine MK2 in a very wise way, we will go through a lot of familiar backgrounds and levels, in a game where platform is the main thing, always mixed with search an use of ítems and other characters. The very good graphics and tunes make us feel as if we were again in the 80s. It reached the 3rd position in the ZX Dev Conversions too.

9 - Metal Man Reloaded
(Oleg Origin, 2014)

Initially released in 1997, Metal Man Reloaded was an improved versión that raised a lot of expectations and interest in 2014. And totally justified, as it is a game that right from the beginning looks unreal, due to the amazing level of color and design of the sprites, with a huge size too. It is an arcade with several different levels, most of them are similar to the ones in Robocop: scrolling shooter plenty o action, and some others have some nice puzzle touches and another one is a quite good driving section which gives the game a needed variety. The only issue could be its too high difficulty.

 9 - Baby Monkey Alba
(Javier Quero, 2017)

Who doesn´t remember those charming machines, the Game & Watch? Baby Monkey Alba is a game inspired by them, although with a deeper course of the action, as it is more of a platformer. It was a nice surprise, as its graphics are very recognizable and its playability is high due to the ability of the autor to create challenging and fun screens. The music will also ring a bell and fits the game perfectly. It got a good position in the ZX Dev Conversions compo, specially because its pleasant gameplay and other details taken from the Nintendo Game & Watch. Good start for Javier and his daughter (tester)!

9 - The Dark
(Oleg Origin, 2016)

Who said that Doom or Wolfstein weren´t impossibe to fit in a Spectrum? Well, maybe impossible for everybody but Oleg Origin, who managed to create a Monster game… in 48K!!!
He proved that the first person shooters were not only possible in a Spectrum, but also in a very playable way. With a medieval-type of story behind the game, he invited us to walk the labyrinths and paths running away from Monsters or killing them. After a few goes when you will get a grip of the controls, the game will unveil impressive sensations never seen in the Spectrum. Impressive graphics and sampled voices are other interesting features.

9 - Mari Trini Freelance Monster Slayer
(The Mojon Twins, 2012)

The super famous group The Mojo Twins presented this intriguing game some years ago, breaking a bit the mold of the es they used to do, creating a title that may remind you of other games like Gauntlet. Everything in here is from a high standard of quality: graphics by na_th_an and Anjuel, and the music by Augusto Ruiz compose an arcade which possesses a good scroll, with a type of action where shooting and exploring are the main points. Big maps and lots of levels make this game something to take a look into.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

9 - Corona Encantada
(Relevo Videogames, 2009)

The first game from Relevo as a group meant also a change in the rules of the Homebrew back by then. The reasons were a few: The first and most surprising one was the role of the legend Alfonso Azpiri creating the cover of the game and helping Jon a little with the design of the characters. The second one was the quality of the game itself, as it looked as one of the never released games of Dinamic, due to its graphic style and its mechanics when playing. The action is quite immersive and gets better the more we play. The second part was announced some years ago, also with a cover by Azpiri and an even more complex mechanic of game. We look forward to seeing it!

9 - Wake me up

One of the most mysterious and surprising authors of the Homebrew, JBGV, he has created some of the most bizarre although entertaining games in the spanish Homebrew scene. Wake me up could be his most ambitious game, where we play the role of a known videogame character who has to wake up in the middle of a nightmare. The story is bizarre and the selection of mini-games is really fun and creates variety. The main story is a platformer with important moments of exploration and some shooting too.

8 - Crystal Kingdom Dizzy
(E. Barskiy, O. Origin, D. Ponomarjov, S. Kosov, MAC)

The russian fellas did it again, a mega hit game that took us a bit by surprise. In this case the surprise may be not so surprising, as the russian have a soft spot for Dizzy, the mascot from Codemasters. AS this is not the first game with Dizzy as the main character that comes out from Russia, this is the best. Rewriting code, graphics, music and all, they improved every single aspect of the original, taking it to a new level. A classic videoadventure that makes the Oliver Twins be proud of it.

8 - L´Abbaye des Morts
(Jerri, DaRkHoRaCe, 2014)

The story behind L´Abbaye des Morts is known in the retroscene, but that does not make it less interesting. The original game was a PC title by Locomalito as a homage to the Spectrum classic games and their look, resulting in a very interesting platformer with a intense atmosphere. The Spectrum conversión was so good that the differences with the PC one were slight. A Spectrum game being a remake of a PC game imitating a Spectrum… crazy! Very good job by Jerri and DarkHorace.

7 - Snake Escape
(Einar Saukas, Jarrod Bentley, Sergey Kosov)

Few games have been so addictive in this Homebrew era if we talk about Snake Escape. With the extra of having been made with Nirvana (therefore, with very colourful graphics), Snake Escape is a conversion of the game Lime Rick, with some different features and look. Now we control a snake, which has a limited ability to move on the screen, and that has to reach the apple in each level to be able to advance to the next one. You will have to use your mind constantly and try one and thousand times until getting the right combination of movements. Named the best Spectrum game of 2016 in the prestigious site El Mundo del Spectrum.

7 - Ninja Gaiden Shadow Warriors
(Jerri, DaRkHoRaCe, 2018)

Ninja Gaiden was a bit unlucky to share compo with Mighty Final Fight, as in any other circumstance, it would have won the compo. Actually, the competition between both games was huge and Mighty Final Fight managed to win the compo in a narrow fight. Ninja Gaiden is the conversion of the Run and Gun game of the same name for the Nintendo Game Boy,  with an overal result which is spectacular and that even Ocean themselves would have wished to do in the 80s. Great fidelity with the original versión, with varied and well designed graphics, smooth in its control and a Deluxe soundtrack. A superproduction that deserves to be among the best.

6 - Mighty Final Fight
(Rewind, 2018)

What??? very few people would believe that something like this could fit into the humble Spectrum, and moreover, be this good, but Sanchez´s team did it again. Fixing the por attempt of the 90s (Final Fight, U.S. Gold, 1991), Mighty Final Fight is the conversion of the NES versión to Spectrum, done in a brilliant way. Excellent and colourful graphics and backgrounds, sprites with a big size and smooth and responsive controls, with a very good colission detection (something basic to get a good beat-em-up) are complemented by a very good soundtrack. It left the sceen speechless and showed what the Spectrum can do.

5 - Invasion of the Zombie Monsters
(Relevo videogames, 2010)

IOTZM came in a very convenient moment regarding the Spectrum scene, as by then most of the games were platformers or puzles. This title brings back the Ghosts N´Goblins spirit, as we are in front of an action arcade, a Run and Gun where zombies, monsters and even aliens make team to defeat us. There are big final bosses in each level, some of them huge, and the soundtrack by the former Topo Soft César Astudillo "Gominolas" rounds the product, with a really fitting bunch of melodies. Great game to start the Top 5.

4 - Alter Ego
 (Retrosouls, 2011)

Alter Ego could be already considered as a classic among the Homebrew, and not only because it was afterwards converted to a big number of machines (NES, MSX, C64, etc), but also because of its impact in the scene. It is a mixture of puzzle and action, where we have to guide our character through minimalist backgrounds to get all the ítems on screen. For that we will have to use wisely the ability of hour hero, which can transport himself to the place where his "mirror" friend was, his alter ego. Prediction, anticipation, and coordination are the premises in this classic. Very cute and playable.

3 - Ninjajar!
 (The Mojon Twins, 2014)

Ninjajar! was another crazy idea that came out from the Mojon Twins heads, but this time it wasn´t just that, it was, possibly, the best platform game on the Spectrum. It is a homage to the Sega Master System classic Alex Kidd, and to do so the spanish group created a very long game, with a lot of different levels (including underwater ones) levels exploding in color and sprites carefully drawn. Also, we can´t forget about the soundtrack by David Murciano, that brings back classic from the 80s. Some touches of exploration, use of ítems and trying to complete the 100% of the game provide a long and entertaining life to this game. Like having a Master System.

3 - Los Amores de Brunilda
(Retroworks, 2013)

If Corona Encantada was  a game changer in the Homebrew scene, Los Amores de Brunilda from Retroworks could be considered as another boiling point in the Spectrum gaming. And not only because of the astonishing physical reléase of the game, with a wooden box with the game artwork on it, but also for the game itself, an adventure which looks very similar to the Legend of Zelda games regarding the perspective where we see the action, which features a very deep playability. There will be a lot of exploration and interaction with other characters, ítems that we will have to learn their use and fights with enemies that use the Dance Revolution system. Winner of the 2013 Spectrum game of the year in World of Spectrum.

2 - Castlevania Spectral Interlude
(Rewind, 2015)

Sanchez and his fantastic team made a dream come true for all the Spectrum users: to be able to play a Castlevania adventure on the Spectrum. And not only they did it, but they did it big, exceeding the most optimistic dreams we could have had. This adventure/arcade has some of the best graphics for the Spectrum regarding color and composition, with easily recognizable characters from the original games, and the same goes for the soundtrack, as the tunes could have been taken from any of the best Castlevanias from Konami. The progress of the game is not linear, which means that we will discover more zones and details of the action as we advance. Big and spectacular bosses are another quality in this (also) hard game.

1 - The Sword of Ianna
(Retroworks, 2017)

Probably, together with Castlevania Spectral Interlude, The Sword of Ianna is the most impressive game ever done in the Spectrum. More than a game, Ianna could be considered as an experience. The level of the technical aspects is simply the limit of what a Spectrum can do. The graphics are unbelievable, with a lot  of color, excellent animations, character design and size, and the soundtrack, composed by ex New Frontier genius McAlby, is one of the best you will ever hear in a Spectrum 128K. Another remarkable thing is the awesome design of the levels and screens, that allow the player never get bored, as the variety is huge: platforms, battles, puzles... and all in several different levels with their own personality. This unique game was also released in a cartridge for the Spectrum called Dandanator, although the game fits in a +3 disk in both sides.

Empecemos!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8 months ago I posted an entry about the new Homebrew games that were going to be released back in September or later on. Some of them were actually released but some others are still to be released or they may end in the depths of a PC somewhere. To créate a Little bit more of hype in the Homebrew world, here is another series of games which look to be son released. Let´ get it started!

JUANJE´S REVENGE (Metsuke)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After Javi´s Big Adventure, the well known member of the scene Raúl Carrillo, AKA Metsuke, wants to give another try to AGD in order to improve his previous work, with a single screen arcade, which gathers some concepts and ideas from other games such Bubble Bobble or Snow Bros. Seems that it will bring direct fun with an arcade touch.

SAVAGE PRINCESS (Monster´s Legs Productions)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kevin, the autor of the game, is also a well known member from WOS, aka the Lone Magpie. He created his AGD game in 2016, an arcade with good graphics and some good ideas behind it, called in the Walls of Eryx. Now he will try to raise the bar with a game in the Ghosts N´ Goblins mold. We should follow closely its advances.

TREASURE ISLAND (Epsilon Games)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Russia we are getting again what seems to be another blockbuster. An adventure based on a cartoon TV show from Russia, with arcade touches, similar to the Dizzy series and what looks to have the usual stuff in the russian games: Excellent graphics, deep playability and a high level regarding the tech side of the game.

GREMLINS 2 THE NES BATCH (Greenweb Sevilla)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Antonio "Greenweb Sevilla" started not long ago to créate Homebrew games, with his versión of what Fantasy Zone would have been in the Spectrum. From that momento on, he kept on improving and maneged to master the MK2 from The Mojon Twins to release Gimmick! and others. Now he challenges himself with a totally diferent game, with a top-view game based on the NES reléase of Gremlins 2. Looks very good and moves smoothly.

TELETEXTO THE VIDEOGAME (Ancient Bits)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The crazy team behind Ancient Bits and Fase Bonus are trying to create the ultimamte homage to the 80s, a game about the old and beloved Teletext service. For that they will use a lot of sense of humour and a lot of minigames based on the sections of the Teletext.

CHIBI AKUMAS (Keith S.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conversion of a Amstrad CPC game, Chibi Akumas is a peculiar game due its colourful and spectacular looks and its history, which compone a Bullet Hell style of shoot em up with big sprites. It is also remarkable to say that has been converted to 3 different machines: CPC, Spectrum and MSX2.

MOON (Jevilon - Errazking)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Near completion for about a time, this is an interesting mix of arcade (our astronaut can shoot), platforming (jump will be crucial to complete the adventure) and adventure (finding objects). With some parts that will remind you of Manic Miner and a very smooth control, the sprites are small but very cute (done by Errazking) and was done with AGD.
